New offering - "Step-on" Tours!
A few weeks ago, Candy Jarvis, of Candyland Travel, called me with an unusual request - could I guide her group of Oklahomans, visiting Maine at the peek of fall foliage, as a “step-on” guide, coming aboard their motor coach in Bath, and traveling with them to Belfast (about 70 miles over four hours)? I was candid with Candy - YES I could do it, but this would be my first time. She was game, and straight to research I went!
I spent quality time in the History room at the Patten Free Library here in Bath, and visited the History Center at the Camden Public Library. Most importantly, I drove the route, to see what can you actually see from coastal Route 1, and what would be left to the imagination. This helped me pace certain stories, cut some, and add others. I also dove into my own children’s book collection, because some of the best stories about coastal Maine (e.g. Andre the Seal!) have been captured by talented authors and illustrators.
The trip went well! We had two stops along the way - both what I called “low risk, high reward” in that they were easy logistics, could be done in a short amount of time, and had big payoffs for the guests. Candy was happy because she could turn it all over to me (in part because she was on the phone most of the time, attending to guests’ needs and next stops’ logistics). David, the Custom Coach driver, said I was one of the best guides he’d ever heard, in part because I didn’t “read off a script.” Of course, their feedback meant a lot to me! I had so much fun that I am officially launching my “step-on guide” service for any motor coach tour seeking to enhance their visit to coastal Maine. I can’t guarantee the weather, but the clouds and haze lifted just in time for this shot overlooking Coastal Maine. Please contact me if you want to learn more!
