Ready for Tours!

Ready for Tours!

Though we are open year-round for custom and on-demand tours, it’s safe to say RESEARCH is the main focus of the off-season here at Embark Maine Tours. I am grateful for active history organizations that fueled my learning all winter long with events, lectures, exhibits, book signings, etc.. Especially the Maine Maritime Museum (pictured here) and the Patten Free Library’s History Room.

Interestingly, friends and neighbors keep dropping off books for me, as they do their spring cleaning and realize they might not have a use for “The Millennium Bridge: Crossing the Kennebec River” or “The Book of Hulls: The History of Bath Iron Works Ships, Vols. 1 and 2” - but I do! And I can do my own browsing and shopping at Bath’s FIVE bookstores, or the excellent used bookstore next door in Brunswick.

Some highlights of what I learned?
-In geology, there is no such thing as “ledge” - it’s bedrock.
-Wabankai people traveled far and wide for food - that’s why so many place names are related to food or land use.
-During World War II, Bath Iron Works’ workforce peaked at about 12K - about 2K of whom were women. (My students pointed out prior to steel ships, would BIW have been called Bath Wood Works? Great question!)

Looking forward to see you on either our Downtown Tour or our Historic Neighborhood Tour this season!
